How Kang In Lee's Signing Is Driving Atlético Madrid's Expansion into South Korea

Atlético Madrid’s signing of Kang In Lee is about far more than strengthening Diego Simeone’s squad. It could become one of the smartest commercial moves made by any European club this summer.
With Son Heung min leaving Europe for LAFC, South Korea has lost its biggest icon in one of Europe’s top leagues. However, this creates a major opportunity. Lee immediately gives Atlético a direct connection to one of football’s most passionate and commercially valuable fan bases.
The early signs suggest the strategy is already working.
According to Marca, Lee became Atlético’s best selling shirt before even training with the squad, outselling Julián Álvarez. Very few players can generate that level of demand before making their debut.
But shirt sales are only small part of a much bigger strategy.
Ahead of Atlético’s match against Manchester City in Seoul, the club has opened temporary stores across the city, launched its first official Asian supporters club, and created Casa Atleti Seoul. The four day fan experience begins today and it includes club memorabilia on sale, player appearances, EA Sports FC 27 activations, a collaboration with Korean fashion brand Over The Pitch, local food, live entertainment, and membership drives and packages designed to turn interest into long term supporters.
This is not simply a marketing campaign. It is an investment in establishing Atlético’s presence in one of the world’s most valuable football markets.
The timing is no coincidence either. Lee is expected to make his debut in Seoul rather than Madrid, allowing Atlético to introduce their new star in front of the audience they are trying to reach. From a commercial perspective, it is difficult to imagine a better launch.
The football benefits are clear as well. Lee adds creativity, technical quality, and versatility to a squad looking to replace Antoine Griezmann’s influence. But the commercial value of the transfer could prove just as important or even more important over the coming years.
Atlético have spent the last decade working to close the commercial gap on Real Madrid and Barcelona. Building a stronger presence in Asia is an important part of that ambition, and Lee gives them the perfect opportunity to do it.
In my opinion, this is not just a player signing.
It is a long term investment in expanding Atlético Madrid’s global brand, growing commercial revenue, and building a loyal international fan base.
In modern football, the smartest transfers are not only judged by performances on the pitch. They are also judged by the commercial opportunities they create off it as well.
